Reuleaux curves based on extended width of regular polygons / Johnny G. Mulato

Abstract / Excerpt:

Abstract: Reuleaux Curves based on extended width of regular polygon is the generalization of the study of Gambe-Coquilla (2004) entitled Reuleaux Triangle and its extension. This study focused only on the construction of Reuleaux Curves based on extended width of regular polygons to be curves of constant width. The work of JDE Konhauser (1997) " curves of Constant Width", SMART (1998) " Reuleaux Triangle", Ivars Peterson (1996) and Gray (1997) "Reuleaux Polygon" were used to support the claim. It has been shown by construction that when the width of reluar and odd sided convex polygons are extended in uniform distance form the vertex, Reuleaux Curve resulted. It has been shown further by alternate proof that their perimeter is equal to the circumference of the ciruclar region. And therefore, Reuleaux Curves based on extended width of regular polygons are curves of constant width. Based on the results of this study, it is prposed that a similar study be replicated to further investigate n-gons of Reuleaux Polygon and answer the following questions: 1. Is it possible to construct Reuleaux Curve based on extended width of regular polygon with even number of sides? 2. Is it possible to construct Reuleaux Curves based on extended width of irregular polygons with an odd number of sides? Does it work with an even number of sides? 3. Based on the data retrieved from this study as shown in appendix A (table 1), derived an alternative formula for the Perimeter of Reuleaux Curves based on extended width of regular polygons and show the corresponding proof.
