Profile of selected trade union members in Davao City

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: This paper would like to know and find out if being a member of a Union would help a laborer change his condition to a more desirable one. This would include the improvement of his economic status and the recognition of his right as a worker. This will also study the effects, both negative and positive of the union to the members and to what extent can the Union protect its members.
Methodology: This research is a descriptive study that focused on the profile and experiences of trade union members in Davao City.
Summary of Findings: More than three-fourth of the respondents said they did not have any other sources of income. Some of the respondents have other source of income and the percentage of those who earned income and the percentage of those who earned income from P1,000-4,999 is 11.3%. Seventy-four percent of the respondents do not have any household member that was currently employed. Negotiating Agreement to channel their demands to their management. Most of th respondents are convinced that the government is pro-management. The respondents comprising 70.7% agreed that the union encouraged them to voice out their needs and sentiments that's why 86% considers being a union member advantageous. About half of the respondents said that there were no problems in terms of the leadership of the union officials, however, there were some answered that sometimes the management can control their leaders. With the government, they find them to be pro-capitalist as manifested by their delaying of hearings and tactics for those cases that largely affects them. Some of the respondents find their management to be considerate in hearing their demands however there were instances that they have interests which do not benefit the workers. 64 out of 150 respondents rated their officials as good leaders. A total percentage of 80% said that the union has given them benefits in terms of political education (19.9%), awareness/seminars (26.3%), and rights/privileges (39.8%). For economic benefits, they received subsidies (24.3%) such as rice, allowance, free education, and others. For the social benefits, they said that the union had contributed to the betterment of their organization as workers in terms of socialization and alliance (40.6%), attending seminars/education (26.3%) and health benefits (14.5%).
