Pre-practicum practices of selected teacher education institutions in Davao Region

Abstract / Excerpt:

This study conducted in six selected TEIs in school year 2003-2004, consisted of two parts: Part I which answered the questions on the demographic profile of the respondents and the curricular and co-curricular practices of TEIs relative to developing knowledge of subject matter, teaching skills and teaching attitudes and values and PArt two which proposed changes/improvements in curriculum implementation which are relevant, feasible and economical as a result of the findings. Research design was descriptive survey method using questionnaires as the main instruments for gathering data primarily from the student teachers, supplemented by data taken from supervising instructors and subject teachers. Most of the student respondents were female, aged 20, majoring English , Filipino, General Science or Math. Most of the subject teachers and supervising instructors were also female with enough experience in the teaching profession. Findings showed that the methods used in teaching profession. Findings showed that the method used in the teaching of general education subjects and professional subjects were more or less the same with lecture-discussion as the most popular. For teaching skills, preparation of teaching devices and lesson planning were the top skills of student teachers felt already possessed even before practicum, while the skill that should have been developed was communication skills. For teaching attitudes (values), perseverance and commitment of teaching were possessed by student teachers while discipline and critical-mindedness should have been developed.
