Perceived factors on students’ failures in Mathematics 4 / Mary Judith C. Enriquez

Abstract / Excerpt:

Abstract: The study was done to determine the causes of students' failure in Mathematics 4 for the first three quarters of school year 2003-04. The respondents were failing students whose average grades in the first three quarter were below 75. A questionnaire is provided to the respondents where they would rate according to their perception. The four predetermined factors namely: 1). student-factor 2) home-factor. 3) textbook-factor and 4) teacher factor are reflected on the questionnaire. This study is designed using the decriptive statistics. These findings lead to conclusion that among the four predetermined factors, the lowest mean rating precieved by the failing students is the textbook factor. Though, is the mean value implies that the student could not decide if textbook factor. All the predetermined factors have a weak positive correlation and significantly correlated (r-prob<0.05)with the failing grades. Based on the findings and conclusions of this study, the following recommendations are put forward: 1. Guidance counselors should plan a program for failing students on how to overcome Math anxieties.2. The present Mathematics textbook should be examined well, especially after the pronounced difficulty of many students in understanding it. 3. Teachers must participate in continued professional development to keep abreast with some of the new methods in how to communicate their lessons effectively. They should be provided with necessary training so as to be able to recognize the different types of student learners and thus develop teaching strategies that cater to the needs of the students. The administration should establish some support structures like bridging program, review sessions in schools to help especially students who continue to struggle in Mathematics. 5. Further studies of similar nature should be conducted in all four year levels to sustain the feeble attempts made by this study. These studies will lead to a more conclusive and realistic evaluation of students' performance in Math.
