Parents’ communication style and students’ communicative competence

Abstract / Excerpt:

This thesis deals with the parents' communication style and their adult children's (students') communicative competence. Specifically, the study focuses on the parental communication styles of the parents of English majors and Mass Communication students of Ateneo de Davao University to see if this has a relationship with the students. The study used quantitative, non-experiemental correlation method employing the t-test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Pearson's r to determine the relationships between the variables. Findings show that the level of the four parents' communication styles are moderate which indicates that the parents' communication styles can be observed. On the other hand, the level of Students' Communicative Competence is intermediate which implies that the level of students' communicative competence is moderate. Also, the level of students' communicative competence has no significant difference in terms of course and socioeconomic status. And most of all, there is no significant relationship between the level of Parents' Communication Style and the level of which implies that the students' ability to communicate is not related to their parents' communication style.
