Nematode University in Mangrove ecosystem

Abstract / Excerpt:

ABSTRACT: Nematode diversity in three mangrove ecosystems was investigated. A total of 49 nematode were identified. The most abundant genera recorded from magrove sediments was Paracanthonchus. Nematode genera such as Dichromadora, Viscosia and Pontonema were significantly more diverse in the disturbed mangrove areas, thereby indicating that they were indicator species in this study. Although not statistically significant, these groups numerically dominate the other genera identified in this study. There was no significant difference in the nematode abundance between different mangrove areas in two replicates (p>0.05, ANOVA). Diversity was measured using Hill's index (N0, N1, N2, N0O) and shannon's diversity index (H') of the three mangrove areas. All the diversity values showed that the three mangrove areas did not differ significantly (p>0.05, ANOVA). Pearson-correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between diversity of nematodes and physio-chemical factors such as temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and total organic matter in the three mangrove ecosystems. Of all the factors measured, only the organic matter showed significant pearson-correlation (p>0.01, correlation) with diversity in all mangrove ecosystems.
