Needs profile of peer counseling : their implications towards peer counseling program

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: This study will seek to identify the needs profile of the Peer Counselors of the five colleges and universities of Davao City. It answers: (1) What are the needs profile of the Peer Counselors of the five colleges and universities in Davao City? (2) What are the most common problems of peer counselors? (3) Are the levels of needs of Peer Counselors different when analyzed according to: a) sex, b) year level, c) economic status, d) academic performance for the first semester of school year 1992-93? (4) Are there significant differences in the need levels profile of peer counselors among the five schools?
Methodology: The study utilized the descriptive method of research in the determination of needs of the college peer counselors from the major colleges and universities in Davao City.
Conclusions: (1) The peer counselors have needs in the moderate degree in almost all areas as measured by the EPPS. The result signifies normality in their preference and motivation. (2) In most of the schools, the male peer counselors are more affectionate, nurturing and caring to others and probably in need of affection and care in return. The females are more systematic in their way of life. (3) Social recreational activity and personal psychological relations are the two most felt problems of the peer counselors. (4) Although male peer counselors appear to have higher scores in Heterosexuality both sexes are quite inhibited when it comes to public romantic expression of love. (5) The male peer counselors are more autonomous and independent than the female peer counselors. Aggressive tendencies are quite predominant in the male peer counselors than the female peer counselors. (6) Economic status and year level of peer counselors won't affect the degree or intensity of need of peer counselors when compared with one another. (7) When compared in terms of academic performance the low average performers have the least need for deference while the very low achiever are inclined toward autonomy and independence. (8) Peer counselors in School C with their high exhibition need may be more comfortable taking center stage or attract others attention compared with the peer counselor of the four remaining schools in the sample. (9) Peer counselors like ordinary adolescents have needs and problems that need to be attended.
