Narratives of psychological care: A motherly care

Abstract / Excerpt:

This research study used a qualitative phenomenological design about the Psychological Care among burn patients in Mindanao Burn Unit of Southern Philippines Medical Center. Key-Informant Interviews were conducted among registered nurses. The study undertook Colaizzi's approach to utilize and analyzed the data taken pertaining to the phenomenon.Based on the results, 16 cluster themes were developed then merged into 7 emergent themes forming the findings of the study. Participants understand psychological care as Taking a Motherly Role and Being a Nurse Advocate. A Structured Relief and Empathy among Health providers form the views and experiences of the participants in caring for burn patients. While, Initiating Key Booster Support System and Undertaking Emotional Labour came out as the salient theme about how burn nurses address psychological needs of burn patients. Interestingly, Receptive Attitude was seen as the primary attitude among burn nurses towards burn patients.The research study on psychological care among burn patients enables to potentially improve and expand nursing knowledge and practices in caring for burn patients. The result provides significant findings in helping nurses in their endeavor to understand human feelings and people's unique situation such as burn injury. Thus, preparing burn nurses to assess their knowledge, skills and attitude about psychological care, and prevent potential barriers which can affect quality nursing care.
