Muslim Women in MNLF: Roles and Involvement

Abstract / Excerpt:

The study aims to locate and describe the Muslim women In MNLF Misuari-faction based. Amidst the assertion that the integration of these women in the military organization manifests re-socialization of roles of women, there is still a great need to uncover the real situation and status of these Muslim Filipinas before concluding that indications of potential alleviation of Muslim women's status who are involved in MNLF exists. Using the concept of Islamic Feminism for the analysis of the data, this will serve as a guide for the inputs to be taken. The study is qualitative in nature and uses in-depth interviews in gathering the data. The respondents represent the different faces of Muslim women in MNLF, particularly in the fields of combat, first aid, and constituency-building. In the conducted study, it has been revealed that the theoretical assumptions established by the Islamic Feminist lens pertaining to Muslim women in MNLF era affirmed. Based on the location of Muslim women it the organizational structure, political agenda, civil and military operations, and their roles, these women still experience constriction of their rights to participate in the political matters since their functions are only confined in the domestic sphere. Thus, in line with the goal of this study, signs of departure from the reproductive roles of Muslim women in MNLF are still yet to be realized. In general, the study implies that there is a need to re-educate the Muslim communities in the country on the essential teachings of Islam, especially with regard to the status and rights of Muslim women. In line, with this, reinterpretation of the Islamic scriptures should also be conducted in order to eradicate the existing misconception regarding Muslim women such as the ones experienced by Muslim women in MNLF.
