Abstract: The study assessed mastery learning of grade four pupils in Science based on the result of National Diagnostic Test (NDT). The pretest was conducted July 2, 2002 in three learning areas with their corresponding mean percentage scores (MPS) obtained such as Mathematics with a total score of 44.16, English Reading Comprehension with a total score of 49.41 and Science total score obtained 43.57. Comparing the results, Science showed the lowest score among the three subjects tested. The researcher conducted a study why Science of grade fout pupils got the lowest. The GAP analysis was conducted through focus group discussion and interviews of a lone teacher to find a solution to improve the achievement of pupils focus on the least learned concepts. The result of the gap analysis determined the specific In-service training (INSET) program on "Mastery Learning Strategy in teaching science". After the training, the teacher implemented the strategy and the class was regularly monitored. The posttest was conducted to gauge whether the implemented strategy improved significantly the performance of pupils in Science grade four using the least learned skills which covered the third grading period only. The findings of the study revealed a mean score of .25 and SD of .5 for the pretest, while the mean score of posttest is 3.46 and SD of 1.86. The computed value of t-test is 3.970 greater than its tabulated value of 3.182 significant at .025 level of significance. The results showed that there is significant difference between the pretest and posttest results of grade four pupils in Science using mastery learning approach as a teaching strategy. This indicated that the posttest results improved learning achievement in Science grade IV. Based from the findings and conclusions the following recommendations are given: School administrators may continue providing all teachers teaching Science with appropriate in-service trainings and workshops on mastery learning strategy.
