Lifestyle of children whose parents are working abroad

Abstract / Excerpt:

This study presents a description of the socio-demographic profiles of 54 respondents who are students of the Ateneo de Davao University whose parents are working abroad. Moreover, it also presents a description of the respondent's lifestyle while their parents are working abroad in terms of household responsibilities, school related activities, financial management, communication, feelings towards parent's migration and their leisure time, vices,curfew hour, and subscription to fashion trends. To collect the date, a questionnaire was used. Given the absence of sampling frame for the study, a quota of 75 respondents was pegged for the study, however, after two weeks of data collection, only 54 respondents were covered. The respondents were identified by snowball sampling, that is, the first respondent was asked who else do they know whose parents are working abroad. The findings show that the respondents whose parents are working abroad do not live a queenly or kingly live. They still share with household responsibilities, had a monthly average allowance of PhP 4889, study for an average of two hours a day, had an average or below average academic performance, always communicate with parents working abroad on their academic status, accepted their parents working abroad, had leisure time, usually spent for shopping, watching movies, and internet surfing, with friends, mostly have no curfew hours, and not subscribers to fashion trends. Based on the findings, it is recommended that parents should strictly imposed curfew hours, closely monitor the use of their monthly allowance, and have vices usually drinking alcoholic beverages.
