Abstract: The result of the National Diagnostic Test (NDT) conducted to all Grade IV pupils revealed that the learning achievement of the Grade IV pupils of New Culasi Elementary School, Tulunan South District, Division of Cotabato which is 33.63% was far below even in the Division target of 75% Mean Percentage Score (MPS). In quest to improve the pupil performance, a study on Innovative teaching through formative test in Science IV was conducted. Specifically, it sought answers to the question: Does teaching through formative test improve the learning achievement of the Grade IV pupils in Science? A total of forty-eight (48) grade IV pupils were utilized as the subject. The needed data were obtained from the pretest and posttest results of the NDT in Science. These were item analyzed and subjected to a t-test for correlated samples. Only the three identified least learned competencies of the test covered by the Third Grading Period were given intervention. In the light of the finding, the conclusion deduced was that innovative teaching through formative test significantly improved the learning achievement of grade IV pupils in Science. Furthermore, pupil performance is enhanced when exposed to frequent or continual short tests during the teaching-learning process. Based on the findings and conclusion, it is suggested that all items be subjected for the same study to prove the validity of the findings and that preferably the study will not be limited to one grading period only. It is suggested that formative test would also cater the different learning styles and multiple intelligences of the pupils. It is also recommended for future researchers to conduct replication in other schools or other subjects for comparison of the findings.
