Impact of the industrial development of Panacan as perceived by the community

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: (1) present the socio-demographic, economic and employment characteristics of the Brgy. Panacan residents; (2) determine whether the residents are aware that Panacan is an Industrial zone (3) present the residents' perceptions with regard to the effects of Panacan's industrialization in terms of a) General effects and benefits b) Environmental effects c) Health situation.

Methodology: The study is a descriptive study.

Findings: Most of the respondents households had other working members. The largest percentage (52%) had spouses who were earning income. More than three-fourth of the respondents have an estimated gross household income of P9,999 and below. Around 54% of the respondents were aware that Panacan is an industrial zone. Those who were unaware just learned that Panacan is an industrial zone when the researchers interviewed them. Almost all of the respondents experienced some form of ailments. However, not all of those who experienced sickness believed that it was caused by the industrialization of the area and the industrial wastes released by the industrial establishments in the area. Some of the respondents (58%) said that it was caused by stress, vices, changes in the weather or by some airborne viruses. Out of those who experienced ailments, 44% said that their ailments, as time passed by, worsened. From this percentage, three-fourths (77%) of them said it was due to the industrialization and industrial establishments located in Panacan.
