Abstract / Excerpt:
This study made use of the feminist literary theory in a general sense and was not limited to a specific feminist approach since the researcher deemed this is a patriarchal curb on the freedom of feminism which is supposed to emancipate itself form patriarchy. Content analysis is the method used in this study which was done through a close reading of the three selected short stories, identification of images of women using the outline using the outline of Outstanding Traits of female stereotypes by Jill Savitt and interpretation using the feminist Literary theory. The study found that the selected short stories of Don Pagusara namely: Dreampaths, Norhaina and Talia Migrante portray all the images of women in the Outline of Outstanding Traits of female stereotypes by D. Jill Savitt as the virgin, seductress or goddess, mother/wife/ lover and the old maid. In the selected short stories of Don Pagusara, the most prominent image of the woman is the mother which was extensively discussed in Norhaina and Talia Migrante and was also lightly tackled in Dreampaths. In Norhaina, the image of the mother was significantly embodied by Norhaina as she led the women and the children while protecting her child and eventually giving up her life just to save her child's own. In Talia Migrante, Pagusara gave us Ellen who was very much protective of her child and Talia who saved the child form drowning. In Dreampaths, a controlling and strict mother was briefly presented in Iris' mother. The study also found that Don Pagusara is not confined with one image of a woman as he displays the magnificence of his craft in his teeming short stories filled with multifarious images of women which do not conform to a patriarchal orientation. This study recommends that it is necessary to examine literary works concerning women through the feminist lens that was, is and will be included in teaching the Literature 1 subject in Ateneo de Davao University.
