Abstract / Excerpt:
This phenomenological study focused on the Houseparenting Experiences of Unmarried Women in Mariphil Children's Village, Panabo City, a residential facility for children who are maltreated, orphaned, abandoned, and children who came from broken families. In-depth interview and document analysis were used to explore why these single and unmarried women engaged in parenting role; their lived-experiences as housemothers, and; how they coped up with their role as housemothers. From the responses of the six participants, the researcher uncovered two main reasons for engaging in houseparenting job: (1)Practical Purposes and (2)Motivation for Personal Growth. With regards to lived-experiences, three main themes surfaced out: (1) Influences of individual Factors in Houseparenting Roles (2) Challenging Experiences, and (3) Rewarding Experiences. The reasons for engaging in houseparenting and actual experiences of being a housemother have influenced their coping. The management also gave them assistance in the form of seminar, workshop, and training in relation to houseparenting. Moreover, the management conducts monthly evaluation on the performances of the housemothers to encourage productivity. In addition, stress management activities are also conducted regularly. From the findings, the following are recommended; (1)Thorough recruitment and selection processes to housemother-applicant (2) Formulation of comprehensive training module for a newly-hired housemother (3)Regular activities for the housemothers that encourage self-awareness (4)Effective and comprehensive communication between and among the housemothers and helping team, and (5)Conduct future local researches on the other aspects of residential facility such as children with the general population; children who experienced different forms of maltreatment placed in a residential facility; adjustment and attachment problems of children in the residential facility, among others.
