Handwashing practices of BSN4 of Ateneo de Davao University College of Nursing

Abstract / Excerpt:

This study entitled Handwashing Practices of BSN4 of Ateneo de Davao University College of Nursing focused on the handwashing skills and knowledge of the 30 student nurses having their duty at Davao Medical Center. The researchers used the 100% sampling for the descriptive survey, and purposive sampling for the experimental method. The study used the descriptive-survey research and experimental method wherein the collected results will determine whether students wash their hands properly and to support the data. Questionnaires were distributed among the 4th year nursing students to get the data, frequency and on how the respondents performed the proper handwashing. Experimentation is conducted wherein swabbing the hands of the selected students was doen and subjects the samples for culture media and gram stain. After 24 to 48 hours of culture, the specimen was stained and examined under a microscope to determine what category of the bacteria present,either gram (+) or gram (-). In determining the handwashing practices of the respondents, descriptive statistic, descriptive mean and descriptive percentage were used to determine the result of the data collected. Based on the results, it showed that 4th year student nurses does handwashing practices before and after in contact with patient, giving medication, performing any procedures and handling any apparatus. Hence the students do not follow the required span of time and proper strokes in performing handwashing.
