Abstract / Excerpt:

Television is a reflection of society; society is a reflection of what is portrayed on television. This maxim encapsulates the current emerging perception of self-identified male homosexuals on the portrayal of gays on Philippine television programs. This study, through interfacing attitude with structure, aims to recognize and ascertain the perception of self-identified male homosexuals on how gays are being portrayed on selected episodes of Philippine television programs. The study made use of the Aristotle's SIx Elements of drama in order to establish well-instituted grounds for structure. Aristotle's Elements of drama comprises of the following: theme, plot, characters, language, music and spectacle. Each of the elements contributed to the unabridged perception of the self-identified male homosexuals on the subject of gay depiction on television programs. Data was collected through Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The results of which were tapered into themes: Exaggerated and Inappropriate, Immoral, Prejudice, Decency, Gives Life, and Empowered. These themes generally spring the very perception of the respondents to the topic of the study. This study found out that the respondents (self-identified gays) have various acumens and diverse reactions on the portrayal of gays on Philippine television. Many of them reacted on the depiction of gays imbued with exaggeration and immorality. On how these depiction reflect and affect the acceptance of gays on Philippine society. However, with the advent of modernity that disturbed and led to the alteration on the outlook of gays, all of the respondents greatly and happily recognized the empowerment of gays. And how the society and even the Philippine television, in their venture of exploring authentic gay portrayals, gradually accepts and embraces the reality of gays and in their depiction on television shows and programs.
