Gapnod sa kinabuhi: Experiences of former-convicts in Davao City

Abstract / Excerpt:

The study sought to describe the discrimination experiences by former- convicts in Davao City. It aimed to document their experiences according to social, political, and economic rights as well as their recommendations as to how to address their present condition. The study was descriptive and qualitative in nature and used an in-depth interview in gathering the data. The research shows that the respondents have various discrimination experiences classi?ed according to actors and forms. The respondents experience discrimination in the social, political, and economic arena. In the social arena, they have been discriminated by their families, friends and community. In the economic arena, their right to have stable jobs has been disregarded. In the political arena, their experiences suggest that due to the fact that they have committed crimes. Their decisions in family matters are now illegitimate. This also hinders them in joining activities in their perspective barangay. As such. the respondents asked for the government to offer them assistance in reintegrating back into the society in order for them to live normally again. The study implies that the local government must provide former-convicts temporary jobs. Also the Parole and Probation Administration should conduct career mentoring program and should include the former convicts' families in their counseling program to strengthen their family relationships. Furthermore, the study recommended that an information drive should be conducted to disseminate the information embodied in the anti-discrimination ordinance of Davao City. On the other hand, future studies be conducted to look into the psychological issues faced by the respondents due to incarceration.
