Filipino values portrayed in selected Bollywood

Abstract / Excerpt:

Bollywood films have been rapidly gaining recognition and popularity, not only abroad but also here in the Philippines, more specifically in Davao City. However, no studies have been made to further understand Filipino inclination for these kinds of films in the context of values portrayed though the narrative elements such as plot and characterization. Thus, this study was conducted to determine why Filipinos embrace that which is as foreign as the Bollywood film industry and in what way Filipinos relate to Bollywood films in terms of content such as values. The study was conducted through a Focused-Group Discussion, with the participation of selected students from the Ateneo de Davao University. It was followed by an in-depth interview of film enthusiasts and filmmakers from outside the Ateneo community. Lastly, there followed an in depth interview of key-informants, selected academic instructors of Ateneo de Davao University, which confirmed the results of the survey in terms of the discussion concerning values. The results of this study reveal that the students of Ateneo de Davao University, overall, express an inclination towards Bollywood films because of the novelty and uniqueness of the used narrative elements in film, including the plot and characters, and the way these elements were used to portray values. Moreover, the filmmakers and film enthusiasts expressed an inclination towards Bollywood films because of the strongly effective use of an elaborate plot and well-researched characterization to portray values. The key-informants supported and confirmed the statements made by the student participants and filmmakers or film enthusiasts, more specifically in terms of the values portrayal in the selected films. This indicates that the viewers' recognize and appreciate the existence of Filipino values in the selected Bollywood films. Academic teachers and instructors are highly encouraged to use films in class activities to heighten and strengthen a learner's understanding of values and a learner's level of maturity in analyzing films. However, they must focus on films that discuss and portray values which are clearly defined as Filipino according to Filipino psychology. Intensive research and preparation must also be done prior to creating film that deliberately introduce and discuss Filipino values. Studies on Filipino Psychology must be effectively employed to achieve success in portraying clear Filipino values. Future researchers must conduct a more intensive study involving a larger and more diverse group of participants from different sectors of the society. This is recommended to further validate the preliminary data presented in this study. The proponents of this study also recommend that another study must be conducted on other aspects of Filipino values and films, using other methods of data gathering and analysis.
