Feasibility study on backyard hog-raising

Abstract / Excerpt:

We have interviewed 50 people to find out the demand for piglets. Some of them are hog-raisers while some middlemen from as far as Kidapawan, North Cotabato. Our survey reveals that 84% of the market prefer raising pure-bred hogs to native hogs. This is due to its superior meat quality, good feed-to-meat ratio, low mortality rate, and good mothering ability. It can also get a higher demand selling price as being preferred by meat vendors. The interviewees who preferred native hogs made their choice mainly because of the cheaper cost of native piglets. Native pigs are also not picky-eaters so they are easier to raise. Some also cited that they are already used to raising native hogs and already have regular buyers. Out of those who chose pure-bred hogs, 95% preferred raising Dalland. These hog-raisers buy their piglets from their neighbors, peddlers, farms, market or, for those who are from Kidapawan of Kabacan, they come to Davao to seek out backyard hog-raisers. All of them are willing to buy from their neighbors if there is a supply. For those who come from the province, they are willing to buy from backyard hog-raisers in Bacaca. For small-scale backyard hog-raisers, an average of 4 piglets are bought and raised per year interviewee. While for middlemen and out-of-town buyers, an average of 60 piglets per year per interviewee are bought. Other interviewees have an average of 2 piglets or 6 piglets per year per interviewee. Out-of-town buyers come to Davao because of the cheaper price here and the short supply in their area. In the past, the demand for the pork has always been constant. Due to the rising population as well as the developing food business, backyard hog-raising has become a thriving business with more and more people venturing into it. We have interviewed people from neighboring areas who have attested to the fact that people from as far as Kidapawan and Kabacan and even other Muslim areas, as well as nearby places like Buhangin, Bankerohan and Matina, visit their area to scout for fatterners and piglets. Even their own neighbors buy piglets from other to raise as fatteners. The supply is even not enough to satisfy the demand. Most of the other hog-raisers in the area prefer to buy Dalland piglets rather than the native ones because of its feed-to-meat ratio. According to an employee from the Department of Agriculture, Mr. Samuel Miranda, the supply of piglets is really not enough to meet the demand in the city and other nearby provinces, so that the market for both piglets and fatteners won't be a problem. Based on our research and interview, we can see that the project will not have trouble finding its market because the need for pork has become a basic need. From our interview with Manong Boy, the president of the GKK in the area, he has confirmed that many people who act as middlemen approach them every month to buy piglets and fatteners. The proponents have been assured of a steady demand for their piglets because in their area alone, there are already more than fifteen backyard hog-raisers who raise fatteners and who are always ready to buy her piglets because of the superior breed and the convenience of the location. In cases that the demand for their buyers is not enough, there are always the scouts who buy in large quantities, or they can contact their buyers in Buhangin, Bankerohan, and Matina. Therefore, the proponents are not overly anxious of the demand of their pigs, because as this marketing study reveals, there are not overly anxious of the demand of their pigs, because as this marketing study reveals, there won't be a slack in the demand for pork. From our survey of 50 respondents, we came up with our total demand for the proponents' piglets by first getting the total number of interviewees who would prefer to buy pure-bred piglets. From our survey, we got the average number of interviewees in that place. This resulted to a yearly demand for the Dalland piglets. Out of the 100% demand, we have found out that 84% preferred pure breeds. After multiplying this percentage with our yearly demand, we obtained the demand for potential buyers who preferred to buy the Dalland breed. We further multiplied this result with the percentage of potential buyers who are willing to buy from Bacaca. Thus we derived our yearly demand for our proponents' piglets.
