Family factors and emotional intelligence of late adolescents / Fe Despabiladeras-Arcenas

Abstract / Excerpt:

ABSTRACT:Researches show that emotional intelligence (EQ) is a better predictor of how an individual will perform in life. According to Bronfenbrenner's ecological model, various aspects of human development, including emotional intelligence, is influenced by one's social environment, foremost of which is the family (Dacey & Kenny, 1997). Family factors like family structure, parenting style, and birth order are said to have an impact on adolescent personality development, especially in the acquisition of emotional abilities to cope with challenges in life. THis study explores the relationship between family structure, parentign style, and birth order with emotional intelligence of late adolescents with respect to emphaty, teamwork, adaptability, communication, interpersonal skills, trustworthiness, decision making, innovation, confidence, and motivation. THe respondents were the 144 regular senior nursing students of Brokenshire College during the second semester of school year 2004-2005. THe study was conducted at the main campus of Brokenshire College in Davao City. To determine the family structure and birth order of the respondents, they were asked to fill up a checklist from attached to the Parental Authority Questionnaire or PAQ (Buri, 1991). They are also answered the PAQ to determine the parenting style of their parents/guardians. THe emotional intelligence of the respondents in the ten dimensions was measured using the Emotional Quotient Scale (Marquez,2002). The Chi-square test revealed that there is no significant relationship between family structure, parenting style, and birth order and the emotional intelligence of the respondents. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended to conduct a similar study on different sample of late adolescent population to determine the consistency of the result. It is also proposed that the Emotional Quotient Scale (Marquez,2002) be revised to make some items in the EQS be relevant to late adolescents with no experience in the workplace.
