Experiences of violence among teenage open gays

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: (1) document the experiences of gays on violence; (2) know the concept of violence from the view of the respondents; (3) identify different forms of violence and the context or situations leading to violence; (4) know what coping mechanisms of the respondents are.

Methodology: The research design of this study is descriptive.

Findings: The data on the nature and extent of violence experienced revealed that usually, the respondents experienced physical abuse, followed by psychological abuse and sexual abuse. The physical abuse was usually inflicted by their immediate families, while the psychological abuse came from the school as well as the sexual abuse. The physical abuse was usually in the form of being slapped in the face by members of their families, being pushed in the school and their arms being twisted by some people from the community. The psychological violence experienced was being insulted in front of friends by their families, insulted in public by their classmates in school and both being insulted in public and in front of their classmates by their neighbors from their respective communities. The sexual violence that they have experienced were usually being forced to have sex with their classmates in school and their neighbors from their communities. In school, all the types of violence were experienced by the respondents. In the community, the data revealed that the respondents experienced physical, psychological and sexual abuse.
