Abstract: The administration of Duging Elementary School is very much concerned on the low performance of pupils in the National Diagnostic Test that was conducted in Grade IV last july 19, 2002. It was found out that of the three (3) subject areas tested, Mathematics is the least learned subject. Based on MPS, mathematics has 31.97% compared to English and Science which have 37.27% and 36.72 respectively. To counter this problem, the research paper was made in order to investigate what caused the low performance of pupils. The head of school assessed the teaching performance of the teachers through classroom observations. Focus group discussion and interview were done to identify teaching difficulties and other factors affecting the performance of pupils. The result of the Teachers' need analysis conducted revealed that one of the factors that attributed to the low performance of pupils in mathematics and other core subject areas was due to teaching strategies adapted by the teachers. With this, the administrator and the teaching staff decided to upgrade the teaching competence and performance through School-based INSET. Thus, cooperative learning through jigsaw strategy was designed to cater the needs of teachers to raise the performance of the grade IV pupils in Dugong Elementary School. The result showed a significant effect on the performance of Grade IV pupils of Dugong Elementary School, Mlang Central district, division of Cotabato in mathematics after adapting the cooperative learning specifically jigsaw as a strategy in teaching mathematics. Hence, this strategy can be adapted in teaching mathematics in the elementary level.
