Emotional perceptions and heavy metal music among first year high school students

Abstract / Excerpt:

The study focused on Davao City National High School students in first year- level. This study was conducted because of the popularity of heavy metal type of music along with the ascending number of youth manifesting undesirable behaviors. Also, studies have found that heavy metal music is associated with addiction, rebellion, and high suicide risk. This descriptive study attempted to determine the association between emotional perception and heavy metal music. This study made use of a two-group research design. Data were gathered from 344 respondents through the use of a 2-item personalized questionnaire with check box for item #1, and sentence puzzle for item #2. Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were made: There is a significant association between emotional perception and heavy metal music; Gender was not significantly associated with emotional perception, although females had a significant association with negative emotional perception as compare the male respondents. Based on the frequency of positive and negative emotional perception reported, there is no significant association between heavy metal music and emotional perception without music exposure. The study recommends the following: (1) the conduct of a further study with a larger number of participants to validate the findings of this study, (2) the use of more familiar words in the questionnaire, (3) the focus the study on the respondents with the same music preference, and (4) the integration of music preference as an important social factor for the students.
