Effects of teaching management styles on second year psychology students’ academic adjustment

Abstract / Excerpt:

Teaching Management style has affected the academic performances of students. In this work, the effects of two types-instrumental and expressive-was tested to see which of the two is more effective in combating the diminishing academic performances. Each intact group was observed for two weeks in which two weekly quizzes were administered to check on their academic performances. In each session, the groups' tardiness and absences per student were tabulated. After the second week, one group was subjected to an expressive-instrumental type of teaching management, while the other group remained under expressive types. For two weeks, the intact groups were again observed. For continuity, both groups were given weekly quizzes to measure their academic performance. After the two-week treatment period, both groups were again observed for another two weeks. The absences and tardiness were tabulated, and the academic performances were checked by weekly quizzes. The study found out that the students under the treatment group had a lower academic performance in both pre-treatment and post-treatment tests. Moreover, their absences increased from an average of thirteen per week to sixteen per week. On the otherhand, records showed a drop in their tardiness from eighteen to eleven per week. The academic performance of students under the control group has dropped from the transmuted range of seventy to seventy-four down to sixty to sixty-four. However, their average number of absences decreased from three per week to two per week. Similarly, their tardiness average has decreased from five per week to two per week. The study concluded two things: there is a significant difference in the academic adjustment in terms of tardiness, absences and academic performance of the experimental and control group.
