Abstract / Excerpt:

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to develop the students' social skills through cooperative learning on mathematics. The study was conducted on 40 fourth year students of Arellano High School during the SY 2001-2002. The students were interviewed and were given questionnaire to determine the effect of cooperative learning in students' social skills and the students' perceptions about cooperative learning. Statistical results indicate that students become more friendly and more cooperative when they are grouped. Cooperative learning helps students build feeling of community in the classroom and create a warmer classroom climate that promotes learning and achievements. They develop their self-confident and trust among their classmates. They have improved also their self-esteem, which lessened the problem of inattentiveness, frequent absences, failure to understand mathematical concepts and same behavioral problems. Most of the students strongly agree that cooperative learning leads to better achievements, increased positive attitudes towards Mathematics and greater acceptance of differences among peers.
