Abstract / Excerpt:
ABSTRACT: The main goal of this study was to develop a pc-based volt-milliammeter, a demonstration tool that mimics a digital multimeter particularly the voltage and milliameter part. Specifically, this study aimed to design and develop a hardware and a software program that will display the voltage and milliameter readings in large-sized digits onto the computer screen. Comprising the main components of the implementation of this demonstration tool were: I.)design and construction of hardware, II.)development of a software program III.)their interconnection. The PC-Based Volt-Milliammeter included the functions of a typical three-range voltmeter and milliammeter measuring either direct current (DC) signal or alternating current (AC)signal. The computer under a program control automatically scanned the selection menu, which contained the choice of electrical meter and range settings. The creation of this demonstration tool took advantage of the unlimited capabilitiesof the computer in displaying large numerical values and enlarging images that can easily be seen in all corners of the classroom. The use of this demostration tool will allow students to have clear visual information that directly engage students in class and add impact to each lesson. As a result, real time measured values were displayed on a computer screen in large sized-digits visible to the entire class several meter away. Experiment results regarding the precision and accurancy of the measured readings of the PC-Based Volt-Milliammeter indicated a high performance in the 5-unit range whereas in the 50-unit range, reliable measurements for bigger input signals, 3V to 15V were observed and so for measurements less that 3V, the smaller range of the PC-based Volt-Milliammeter is suggested to be used.
