Culture-specific materials for mother tongue-based education in Matina, Davao City

Abstract / Excerpt:

This study aims to address the problem of the lack of instructional materials for Mother-Tongue-Based Education Program for Grade One pupils in Ciriaco Mariano Elementary School in Shrine Hill, Matina Davao City. Bisaya was used for information gathering. These researchers conducted a survey, Key Informant Interview and Focus Group Discussion for the gathering of data. Results showed that most of the pupils were monolingual Bisaya speakers and very few were bilingual. It was also found out that the stories community folk tell are about superstition, life's hardships, and lessons learned during their childhood. These stories are still culture-specific, because they reflect the lifeways of the people residing the community around Ciriaco Mariano Elementary School. Stories about life's hardships, and lessons learned during their childhood were transformed into graded learning materials. Following the MTBMLE Guidelines which state that the graded learning materials of the students should be in the Mother Tongue, the researchers created graded learning materials in Bisaya. These materials followed the guidelines laid out by Susan Malone (2010).
