Creating a healing environment: a proposed center for natural health and wellness

Abstract / Excerpt:

Fast-paced progress of the 21st century paints a picture of machines, technology, chemicals and diseases, an age of coldness and apathy. How does these hustles and bustles of modern life affect out health? Conventional medicine has historically tried to reduce the healing process to a series of psychological, physical and chemical reactions that can be measured or documented by modern science, forgetting the inherent healing power of nature we possess as human beings. Since man is so busy with so many other things, we tend to forget that feelings, beliefs and opinions of a patient are essential elements in the treatment decision-making process. Architecture that takes full account of these essentials can invigorate life. The problem with today's era is that we tend to forget what is natural and traditional and focus more on the modern technology and the techniques. Prevailing buildings are different from the old ones; they are air-tight, less ventilated and more synthetic-technical. Architecture for healthcare these days has minimal concern for the emotional, mental, spiritual and social aspects of a person. Thus, today's architecture creates more sick buildings than healthy ones, beckoning a call for a facility that would be for the well being of the Filipino man, leading me to my study on creating a healing environment, proposing a center for Natural Health and Wellness that would become the venue of some complementary and alternative medical practices. This study resulted to a facility which took into consideration what is needed in terms of planning and design by the clients that would alleviate wellness. Architecture for the optimal level of man's well-being.
