Abstract / Excerpt:
The following study is an attempt to understand the broad scope of sustainable development through design theories and processes. The vehicle used is an analysis of existing sustainable design theories, strategies, principles, and guidelines, with a focus on an urban planning scale. This thesis is a compilation of the most prevalent sustainable design themes, which provides all the various existing information on this topic. From these common themes, a series of sustainable design guidelines and principles, covering the complete design range of this topic in proposed. A complete holistic perspective of sustainable design is a topic that has not been employed greatly. Thus, it is the reason for this study. It results in a much clearer understanding of the concepts of sustainability, as well as a better grasp of how to steer the design industry towards more sustainable practices. It is important to note here, that this study is focused on sustainable design as applicable to the Philippines, and ideally, in Davao City. Hence, much of the gathered literature and information comes from a general perspective. This study is not representative of the global field of sustainability; other cultures have different perspectives and approaches to sustainable design.
