Abstract / Excerpt:

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of collaborative learning method as a strategy in teaching natural science 1. Specially, this study aims to: 1.Determine if there is a significant difference in the mean gain scores in the academic achievement of students exposed to the collaborative learning method as compared to the lecture method group., 2.Determine if there is a significant difference in the mean gain scores of attitude of the students exposed to the collaborative learning method as compared to the lecture method., 3.Determine if there is a significant relationship between the academic achievement and attitude of the students exposed to the collaborative learning method. The findings of this study showed that there is no significant difference in the mean gain scores of academic achievement of students exposed to the collaborative learning method and of students exposed to the lecture method. Therefore, the collaborative learning method is as good and as effective as the lecture method. There is a significant difference in the mean gain scores of attitude of students exposed to the collaborative learning method and lecture achievement and the attitude of the students exposed to the collaborative learning method. Based on the results obtained from the study, it is recommended that the results of this study be used as reference for further study to determine the factors that effect the academic achievement of the students exposed to the collaborative learning method. Similar studies can be conducted using other groups of students as well as studies in other discipline using collaborative learning method.
