Brillante Mendoza’s Serbis and Masahista: content, messages, images

Abstract / Excerpt:

This study was the conducted to identify the content and images, messages on Brillante Mendoza's films: Serbis and Masahista's films. Specifically, this research aims to dig into the contents of these films through the aspects being identified such as: familial aspects, ideological aspects, religious aspect, economic aspect, socio-political aspect, and psychosocial aspects. Also, it aims to assess the images of these films, how gays were being presented in both films using indicators such as gay portrayal in the scene, tone of voice, language being used, action, type of clothing and sexual activity. Lastly, to identify the messages behind of both films. To gather the needed data for this study, the researchers viewed and reviewed both movies several times and made use of the film abstraction guide as their tool to aid them in extracting the needed data with ease. Moreover, this study is a significant attempt to surface and analyze the contents, images and messages of Brillante Mendoza's Serbis and Masahista. The researchers chose this study as this could contribute in truly understanding the real essence of gay themed films in the Philippines.
