Abstract / Excerpt:
This study is intended to provide reference and information pertaining to the role at institutions in the identity development of the biracial adolescents in Davao City. These institutions include home, school, and society. In this qualitative study, the role of the institutions in the identity development of biracial adolescents was looked into from the perspective of the biracial adolescents themselves. In particular, this study examined how the selected social institutions- home, school and the society, have contributed to the development of the identity of biracial adolescents. This study employed the quota sampling using the snowball technique in finding the respondents. Data needed for this study were gathered through in-depth interviews with 30 biracial adolescents whose ages range from 15 to 27 years old, 15 of who are males and the other 15 are females. The analysis at the respondents' experiences during their socialization process with the selected institutions revealed that the home is the most significant institution. Other institutions such as the school and the society have affected their identity development through their interactions with their teachers, classmates, mass media and peers. Furthermore, the researchers recommend the future researchers to include the coping mechanisms of biracial adolescents since the study has proven that biracial adolescents experience issues about their racial identity. It is also recommended for them to include and add other factors which may also influence and contribute to the biracial adolescents' identity development.
