Attitudinal factors and mathematical learning ability

Abstract / Excerpt:

ABSTRACT: The study aimed to investigate the factors that influence the mathematical learning ability of the second year students of Davao City National High school, DCNHS during the school year 2007-2008. The descriptive-comparative-correlation design was used. Three hundred twenty five (325) second year students, twenty (20) second year mathematics teachers, and sixty five (65) parents of second year students of DCNHS were purposely chosen to participate in the survey. Data were collected and analyzed to determine the level of students' mathematical learning ability and the levels of attitudes in terms of confidence, interest, anxiety and motivation of the three groups of respondents. The study made used of a modified survey questionnaires to determine the correlation between the attitudinal factors and mathematical learning ability of the students. The computation of data was done through statistical package for social science (SPSS) software. It attempted to find out whether there exists a relationship between them. Furthermore, the study measured the degree of influence on mathematical learning ability that can be attributed to similarities and variation of the levels of students' attitudes. The findings showed that the level of mathematical learning ability of the second year students was poor to below average; the level of attitudes of second year mathematics teachers of DCNHS in teaching math was positively very high; the level of attitudes of parents in support to the students of DCNHS was positively high. Statistical findings using pearson moment correlation (r) showed that there was no significant relationship between the mathematical learning ability of students and the level of attitudes of teachers in teaching the subject; and that of attitudes of parents in support to the learning of the students; and no significant relationship between the mathematical learning ability of students and similarities and variations of attitudes of students in very high and average levels.
