Attachment towards children with mental retardation: an analysis of parents’ attributional framework

Abstract / Excerpt:

The following descriptive research study examined the relationship among the parents' causal attribution and affective states and their level of attachment towards their mentally retarded children. Descriptive data regarding the level of attachment issues was obtained through a survey questionnaire concerning attachment-related behaviors which was completed by the respondent parents of children with mental retardation. Attachment scores derived from the survey were correlated to sociodemographic variables (e.g. age, gender, religion, educational attainment, and number of children), perceived causes and affective states of respondent parents (n=34). They were purposively and non-randomly selected parents of children with mental retardation that are studying in three branches of Lamb of God Special Education (SPED) Academy in Davao (The CM Recto, Rizal Street, Buhangin, and Bangkal branches), and Independent Living Learning Centre, and Little Kayes Learning Center. When comparing the correlation between the dimensions of cause with the attachment score, it was hypothesized that the perceived causes of parents towards their children with mental retardation do not significantly influence their attachment. As well, bivariate analysis revealed no significant differences in attachment across sociodemographic variables. Since Similar studies revealed no significant relationship in attachment across the dimensions of cause and affective states, it is determined that the results of this study were likely unbiased by the utilized survey and sample selection.
