Abstract / Excerpt:
The problem of solid waste and its management has become a pressing concern of the Local Government Unit of Nasipit. Rapid economic development of the town being the regional Growth Center of Caraga and the host town of Nasipit International Seaport coupled with unchecked population growth have contributed to the present garbage crisis in the municipality. This study assessed the performance of the LGU in the implementation of Ecological Solid waste Management Program. It identified the LGU's capacity in terms of budget allocation, manpower complement and the existing solid waste management related equipment, used by the LGU in garbage collection. A review of secondary data was used as well as primary data through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) among selected residents from the different sectors to ensure validity of the data collected. The analysis of the study considered the waste character, capacity of the LGU-Nasipit to collect its gift, actual waste collected vis-a-vis waste generated, and the factors that influenced the garbage backlog. Findings showed that LGU-Nasipit has difficulty coping with its implementation on solid waste management, particularly on garbage collection backlog due to: low level of environmental literacy and awareness of the public, improper utilization of solid waste management related equipment, and the weak enforcement of Municipal Ordinance on Solid Waste Management. Recommendations revolved on the strong legislation and enforcement of Solid Waste Management and its institutionalization.
