Abstract / Excerpt:
This research work is an investigation of the technical feasibility of producing dissolving pulp from Muntingia calabura (Datiles) wood employing the Pre-hydrolysis-sulfate process. Cooking of Muntingia calabura wood chips required relatively low active alkali and sulfidity to produce full chemical pulp with low permanganate number. Multi-stage bleaching of wood pulp likewise gave high yields of alpha cellulose based on the oven dried samples. Chemical analysis also showed that prehydrolysis kraft pulp was sensitive to the action of chlorine bleachers. Proper cooking liquor concentrations and well controlled purification conditions produced good quality dissolving pulp from Muntingia calabura recommended for commercial purposes.
