An evaluation of street children’s perception of the services of Balay Pasilungan

Abstract / Excerpt:

Abstract: One of the phenomena of modern day city life, in almost all large cities of the world, and certainly in those situated in what is termed the "developing world", is the presence of street children. These children spend a great deal of time in the streets. Some have stronger connections with home, family and school: others have little or no connection. The cause of this growing phenomena is complex and diverse. How to reach out to those who do , usually through no fault of their own, find themselves making the street their home, is another question. The foundation of Balay Pasilungan Inc. exist in Davao City in order to reach out in care to abandoned street boys. The problem presented for this research was to examine the attitudes and the perception of the boys who have over the years availed themselves of the service offered by Balay Pasilungan in Davao City. The methodology followed and the instrument used was the questionnaire, specifically prepared for the particular need. Most of the respondents interviewed were boys who have previously been residents at the center; other were interviewed who at the time of the research were still living center. The results contained indicate that the general perception by the respondents to the services offered Balay Pasilungan is very favorable. The findings do indicate some areas recommending improvement of service offered, especially in the area of education and value formation. It was hoped that by conducting this research a better "picture" of the services offered might be discovered in order that services may be better adapted to helping the street boys of Balay Pasilungan grow in integrity and be better equipped to face their adult lives and world. It would appear that this has been achieved by this research and that Balay Pasiungan might become an even better tool enabling concerned citizens to better address caring for children of the streets.
