Abstract / Excerpt:
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the activity profile of women and men rice farmers in Wangan, Calinan, Davao City. The research would also want to find out of the involvement of women, children and senior citizens in performing agricultural labor.
Methodology: This study made use of the descriptive method of research. The study utilizes qualitative method of data collection.
Summary of Findings:A. Socio-economic characteristics. The largest percentage of respondents belonged to 45 to 55 above age bracket (31.25%), with an average age of 52. Half of the respondents were males (50%) while the other half were females (50%). Majority of the respondents were married (87.5%), others were single (12.5%). Two-fifths of the respondents had children within the range of 3 to 4 (42.8%), with an average number of children of 5. The largest percentage of the respondents had reached elementary level (37.5%), the lowest percentage had reached college level (6.3%). All of the respondents (100%) Roman Catholic. An equal percentage of the respondents comprising 28.6 percent were 6 below, 6 to 7 and 8 to 9, with an average household size of 7. More than half of the respondent consider farming as their occupation (58.2%) while 43.8 percent were housewives. The are was dominated by the Bol-anons (63.1%) and Cebuanos (31.58%). B. Economic Characteristics. The largest percentage (37.5%) of the respondetns earned an income within the range of P8000 and above, the lowest (12.5%) earnd within the range of P6000 to P7999, with an average income of P8141. C. Characteristics as Farmers. Half of the respondents (50%) wer owners of the land while the other halves were tenants. The researchers have identified the 4 major crops, which were being planted by the rice farmers namely: rice, lanzones, durian, and coconut. the number of kilos of crops per harvest determined the volume of production of the rice farmers regarding the crops they planted. D. Farming Practices. Most of the respondents strongly agreed in using modern technologies like rice tractors (100%). All of the respondents (100%) strongly agreed on provision og high-yeilding varieties of seedlings and seeds. All of the respondents (100%) strongly approved in using pesticides and chemicals (87.5%). Only two respondents, which comprise 12.5 percent had just approves in using fertilizers, pesticides and chemicals.
