Abstract / Excerpt:
This study aimed to elucidate how media practitioners interact when conducting an interview with suspects of any crime. This study was based from the communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) of Howard Giles. The participants for this study included five media practitioners coming from the different print and broadcast companies in Davao City. Two of the five media practitioners were writers from Mindanao Times and Edge Davao while the remaining three were reporters from the different television networks ABS-CBN, GMA and TV5. The two strategic forms of communication, convergence and divergence, under CAT were given focus in order for the conceptualization of themes based from the validated interview guide questions. Results showed that establishing good rapport with the suspect was most used by the media practitioners in accommodating the suspects in the interview process. The media practitioners mostly applied convergence especially when they need to invite the suspects to participate in the interview. However, divergence, such as nagging the suspects, use of authoritative tone and aggressiveness, was also applied when there were instances when the media practitioners really needed to get a response from the suspect.
