A study on the Indonesian Diaspora in Davao City

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: (1) present the socio-demographic and economic profile of the Indonesians in Davao City; (2) determine the reasons that led to the Indonesian diaspora in Davao City; (3) determine the respondents perceptions on Davao City Local Government's performance and they compare it with their own local government unit in Indonesia; (4) determine the extent of political awareness of the respondents with their homeland and their attitudes towards it.

Methodology: This is a descriptive study of the Indonesian diaspora in Davao City.

Conclusions: Respondents educational attainment, 47.1 percent of the respondents had only reached elementary, some 8.6 percent were able to finish high school, while 14.3 percent were able to reach college. More than half are presently employed while the remaining remains to be unemployed. Almost half of them are engaged in labor and manual jobs, while 14.3 percentage sre engaged in teaching and 10 percent engage in office works. Economic opportunities have become the main factor for their migration. Nevertheless, some 20 percent revealed that it is the similarity of culture that led them to migration. Majority believes that quality education is one of the greatest factor that affected their choice of stay in the City. Regardless of any other factor, Davao City offers cheaper and standardized education. More than half of the respondents regarded the local government of City as good, while others observed the LGU of Davao City as systematic. LGU in Indonesia and in Davao City is quite similar in some ways. Majority of the respondents rated Davao City almost perfect because they believe that Davao City is politically and economically stable and that the City is according to them peaceful.
