Abstract / Excerpt:
Objectives: This study determines the present situation of the Davao Cut flower industry falls under the descriptive kind of research. It covered various aspects involved in the industry, from production to the individual consumption.
Methodology: This study is a descriptive study.
Summary of Findings: Socio-Demographic Characteristics of the Cut flower growers. A large percentage of the respondents were above 50 years old due to the fact that people within this age bracket had nothing to get busy with and they can therefore attend to their business most of the time. It was also known that most people who made cut flower growing as hobby were in this age category. It was also known that most of those who are in the Cut flower business were female (58.9%), because flowers are usually associated with the females. But due to the increasing demand in the market the male (41.1%) cultivators were not very far behind. Majority had finished a Bachelor's degree (73.9%). Most of the respondents were the owners of the cut flower farms of which 65.7 percent were into other business before going into the cut flower business. Most of those who ventured into this business were average earners (P10,001-15,000) maybe because they found this business more lucrative. Most of the respondents spouses were also relying in business as their sources of income. Farm Data. Most had only one farm (61.1%) for having many farms could quite taxing to the part of the owner. Of the total 299 farms 48.3 percent can be found within the city limits, so as it would be easier for the owner to look into their farms. Due to it's favorable weather conditions Calinan(38.3%) had the second largest number of farms. To maximize profits most of those who are into cutf lowers owned their farms and also because cut flower industry does not need huge lands to start with, in fact most lands are between 1001-5000 square meters (42.1%). Vandas (97.2%) and Dendrobiums (93.3%) are the most common varieties found in the cutf lower farms because of the fact that these are the most in demand varieties in the market. Production. Majority of the respondents found cut flower business is indeed a difficult venture (65.0%) due to the fact that it involves too much time and resources. Most of them started during the boom years of the industry which sprayers. It would not be necessary to hire additional workers even during peak seasons. Some owners hire additional workers mostly for cutting grasses and flowers in the farm(72.7%). When hiring of additional workers becomes necessary most only hire an additional of one worker (45.5%) to two (27.3%) workers. Capital Investments. Most of the farms had a starting capital of between P150,000-P300,000 and most of these amounts were acquired through loans(63.0%). If the loaned amount would not be enough to ensure production in the farm an added capital investments was raised by the owners which is usually obtained from their own pockets.
