A profile of the masseuses in two massage parlors in Davao City

Abstract / Excerpt:

Methodology: The study utilized the descriptive method in answering its objective.

Summary of Findings: A large percentage (46.9%) of the respondents are married (27.7% separated, 12.8% still living with their husband and 6.4% were widow), in their mid-20's (x=24.6), mostly high school graduates (58.3%), born within Davao Provinces (63.8%), Cebuanos (55.3%), Roman Catholics (91.5%), and having an average of 4.4 household members. The respondents usually came from a family father was a farmer (27.6%) while their mothers were housekeepers, with an average family size of 6.5. They were usually the "middle child" (48.9%) and currently not residing with parents (78.7%). Close to half of the respondents (44.7%) indicated no previous employment while those reporting employment were usually involved with sales related work (23.4%) receiving an average of P2,692 monthly. They left their previous jobs due to insufficiency of income. They were receiving an average of P5,988.86 weekly from their current employment. Only a few (27.7%) of the respondents had other source of income usually sari-sari store (53.8%), with montly average income P3,115. Some of the respondents (19.4%) were receiving an average of P2,666 monthly as financial assistance from child's father. They were receiving a total average monthly income of P23,352. Only a few of the respondents owned a house and the lot where the house is erected (25.5% each). The type of housing materials used were semi-permanent possessions include electric fans (78.7%), clothes closet (72.3%), and radio cassettes (72.3%). The two most mentioned skills of the respondents that can be used for earning a living were cooking (42.5%) and dancing (36.1%).

Objectives: The study seeks to come up with the profile of the masseuses in selected establishments in Davao City. Specifically it aims to determine: 1) the socio-demographic and family background of the respondents; 2) the economic characteristics of the respondents; 3) the factors resulting to the entry of the respondents to masseuse; 4) present the working conditions of the respondents; 5) the aspirations of the masseuses in Davao City; and 6) the type of assistance they received and wanted to receive. The study utilized the descriptive method in answering its objective.
