Abstract / Excerpt:
Objective: To present the profile of the student assistants in Ateneo de Davao University.
Methodology: The research design of this study is descriptive in nature.
Summary of Findings: (1) The female respondents outnumbered the males with the females having a percentage of 86.2 of the total respondents. Most of the respondents fall between 18-19 yrs of age. All of the respondents are single. Majority of the respondents live with their parents followed by those in boarding house. (2) Most of them have only one working household member. Working household member have three to four dependents. The mean income of their household member is P3,800.00 only. Most of the respondents' family have farms as another source of income. Almost half of the respondents had personal savings. Almost all of the respondents perceived their social status as middle class while the remaining viewed theirs as lower class. (3) More than half of the respondents finished their grade school education in public schools. Almost all of the respondents did not transfer from another college. Most of them are 3rd and 4th year students. Most number of students assistants are from Bachelor of Science major in Accountancy with 18.5 units enrolled. (4) Majority of them claimed that they had prior working experience. Of those that have prior working experience clerical and saleslady compromised 25% respectively of the overall response. Financial reason (52.55%) was their reason for working as student assistant. It was found out that the Library was the most frequent office served by the student assistants and the most number of hired hands. It is notable that a significant number of respondents did not know their pay per hour. They claimed that the benefits they gained from working as student-assistant were to gain experience and tuition fee discount. The student assistants encountered so many problems at work like lack of time management, relationship with co-workers, and difficulty in dealing with students. Majority of the student assistants had financial difficulties due to school expenses, unstable or insufficient parents' income, lack of allowance and difficulty in budgeting.
