Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: This study was conducted to know the socio-demographic and economic characteristics of ADDU college scholars, to determine their academic profile and to find out their common problems in terms of finances and living conditions, social and recreational, home and family and adjustments in college.

Methodology: This study is descriptive in nature describing the common characteristics and problems of the scholars.

Conclusions/Recommendations: (1) One criteria in the selection of the scholars is income. Those with family annual income of P60,000 and below will be a candidate for scholarship. However, average monthly income received by the respondents' father and mother revealed otherwise. This indicate the extent to which the screening committee strictly observed the income criterion in the selection of scholars. There should be mechanisms to make sure the limited resources are granted only to deserving students for example, visit to the applicants for the scholarship. (2) Most commonly mentioned problems of the respondents were financial. This suggests that although the scholars were given discounts or even free tuition and fees their studies were still affected. Scholars are not exempted from school related expenses like books and photocopying and are also sometimes required in other school activities that entails unreasonable expenses. (3) Since the study focuses on the non-government funded scholars, another study with the inclusion with those government funded scholars is deemed necessary. This will provide a better understanding of the situation of the AdDU scholars. (4) The study focuses on the non-government funded scholars due to the absence of orderly list of government funded scholars. It is thus recommended that the record of the scholars both government and non-government should be regularly updated by concerned offices likewise Office of the Dean and Registrar's Office for the government scholars.
