A descriptive study of four selected agrarian reform cooperatives in Davao Province

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: (1) to present the profile of Anibongan Multi-purpose cooperative, Tubod Free Farmers cooperative, Tagdangua CARP beneficiaries cooperative; (2) to describe the performance of the individual cooperatives in terms of their off-farm and on-farm net income; (3) to determine the reasons behind the regularity and irregularity in payment of the amortization of the four cooperatives; (4) to determine the support services given to the four cooperatives.

Methodology: The research used a descriptive type of study.

Findings: ANIBONGAN MULTI-PURPOSE COOPERATIVE (AMPC) was the earliest registered cooperative because of the easy land transaction. It had the least number of members and board of directors. Despite the limited number of members, the officers still did not manage to coordinate the general assembly. Their increasing operating expenses in an inconsistent income discharged low cooperative productivity. TUBOD FREE FARMERS COOPERATIVE (TFFC) with the largest awarded land area, they constituted the highest number of members from the year they had started and decreased in the following years to almost one-fourth of its population. Tubod free farmers beneficiaries suffered the worst performance in 1995, but this was not a discouragement but became a challenged, relatively they had the best performance in 1997 because of favorable conditions. Because of the currency crisis that struck the country, along with the existence of the EI Niña phenomenon, members of TFF Beneficiaries experienced low productivity which made their payment in amortization drop to a -99%. The support services extended to TFF Beneficiaries were minimal because the cooperative was not the entry point of the different government agencies, which led them to second least supported cooperatives. TAGDANGUA CARP BENEFICIARIES COOPERATIVE INCORPORATED was a joint venture with Mabini Industrial Tree Planting Incorporated. They were the only closed-type cooperative in terms of demographic composition. Although the economic conditions particularly the dollar exchange rate was beneficial for the cooperative; still it affected their performance in terms of input prices. NEW MALITBOG MULTI-PURPOSE COOPERATIVE, had the smallest land holdings under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program. They also had the least number of activities. Even with the fewest Agrarian Reform beneficiaries and fewest numbers of activities, performance was the best out of the four. They were the only cooperative with individual titling.
