A Critical discourse analysis of selected ‘Word of the Lourd’ episodes

Abstract / Excerpt:

This study is aimed to analyze the discourses found in 'Word of the Lourd' (WOTL) episodes using Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). An intensive qualitative analysis of selected ten (10) episodes is conducted in order to derive the representations, identities and relationships set up in each episode. Results show that many of the topics discussed in every episode are represented with another connotation that is different from its original meaning. Also, the personalities involved in each episode are labeled with different identities in order to emphasize the program's intention to criticize these involved personalities. Moreover, 'WOTL' episodes build relationship in a way that it acts as an informer and at the same time entertainer to its viewers. The program revolves around the realm of information and entertainer since its role is to inform the people with the current issue and also to convey awareness on social, political and other issues and at the same time, to deliver its message in an unconventional and entertaining way. This study can be used as a reference as to how the media outputs, in the local context, construct social realities through its discourses
