A case study on sidewalk vending as an economic activity

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objective: This study seeks to analyze the economic activity of the sidewalk vendors located in four major streets of Davao City.

Methodology: The study used an analytical and descriptive approach in coming up with the analysis of sidewalk vending as an economic activity in Davao City.

Findings: The socio-demographic and economic profile of the vendors characterizes the urban poor living condition. Sidewalk vending is mostly the respondents primary source of livelihood, this proves that the entry into the economic activity is relatively easy for the urban poor provided that they have capital and place to ply their trade. A significant to note on the study is the source of initial capital, wherein a considerable number of respondents borrow their capital mostly from informal credit markets which includes loan sharks that charge 20% interest rate. The regression analysis between the use of operating/circulating capital (independent variable) vis-a-vis the increase in net profit. In-order for the sidewalk vendors to raise their net profit there must be a corresponding increase in capital to do so. This condition shows that sidewalk vending as an industry had contributed a significant amount to the city's economy. Through profit analysis, sidewalk vending is a very potential source of livelihood for the city's urban poor population.
