Tomato and sweet potato are the best sequential crops for corn, followed by cabbage, bush sitao, cowpea and pole sitao. Intercropping does not alter most of the soil properties measured such as pH, OM and soil N, P and K contents. All of the intercrops used provide greater net returns and land equivalent ratio (LER) values over the sole corn crops. Corn as base crop is a better competitor than the vegetable intercrops. Trellising of pole sitao, transplanting of tomato and chinese cabbage and the use of cuttings for sweet potato improve their competitiveness.
