The mud crab of the genus Scyla is a major commercial crustacea resource in Panguil Bay. Over forty percent of the 1991 recorded fishery production are crustaceans composed of crabs and shrimps. Of this figure forty-four percent are mud crabs. There are two culturable varieties of mud crabs in the Bay, however the red variety especially the female ones is preferred. The crabs are fed with various feed materials locally available. The major obstacle to the development of mud crab culture into a stable and large-scale aquaculture industry is technical and related to the complete dependence upon the wild population for seedstock. It is recommended that research on the aspect of crab biology to seedling production be intensified. Further, it is essential that the natural population of mud crab and its habitat be protected.
